Let’s get started.

First Impressions

Ring 2 is a perfected, refined and enhanced wireless doorbell that exceeds the 1st generation version in every aspect. It also has high ratings and a lot of positive reviews. Its main competitor, Ring Pro is a high-quality smart doorbell with unique and outstanding features too.

It has gained recognition as the most reliable and useful doorbell that meets users expectations. Let’s find out how these two doorbells compare to each other. To do so, we’ll analyze the most important features of each device.

It’s important for all modern digital home devices to have eye-catching designs. As such, you should buy a gadget that improves the overall attractiveness of your home. It’s crucial that your doorbell’s design looks good because you’ll be mounting it next to your door. Let’s take a look at the two doorbell’s design.

Ring Pro Video Doorbell

Ring Video Doorbell Pro

Ring Pro’s design has 4 interchangeable faceplates, a traditional doorbell look and is well-sized. Unlike Ring 2, the Pro version offers you a variety of options to change your doorbell’s visual appearance to your liking.

This doorbell has an ultra-thin design as it measures 4.5 x 1.85 x 0.8 inches. It’s also eye-catching, well-made and compact. The interchangeable faceplates offer an additional perk since you can change your doorbell’s appearance whenever you want.

Ring 2 Video Doorbell

Ring Video Doorbell 2

The first thing you’ll notice when you come across Ring 2 doorbells is their attractive appearance. The 2nd generation Ring 2 doorbell is similar to the 1st generation. However, it only has 2 interchangeable faceplates (Venetian and Satin nickel) and is bulkier in size.

Ensure you measure the area where you intend to install your doorbell before making the decision to buy Ring 2 doorbell due to its bulky size. Despite the size, it doesn’t look weird after installing it on your door. The doorbell measures 5.05 x 2.50 x 1.08 inches.

Audio Quality

Both Ring 2 and Ring Pro offer 2-way communication to enable you speak with your visitors using your smartphone or any other compatible device. You’ll get instant and reliable notifications when a visitor rings your doorbell. The two doorbells are also equipped with noise cancellation features to ensure you get clear audio.

Video Quality

Ring Video Doorbell Pro

Ring Pro’s 1st generation doorbells were sending false alerts. As a result, Ring decided to upgrade their next video doorbell. They ensured Ring Pro was well-built by introducing a great feature called “customizable alert zones”. Due to this, Ring Pro no longer sends false alerts.

It’s also smart enough as it differentiates cars and people. You can customize the areas you want the doorbell to focus on using motion zones. If certain areas are making the doorbell to send false notifications, you can adjust the motion zones to only focus on specific zones. This will minimize false alerts.

When it comes to the recording quality, it’s excellent as the doorbell records in 1080 pixels. The images are of high-quality and clean. The night vision is also fantastic.

Ring Video Doorbell 2

Ring 2’s motion detection system is outstanding. When compared to the 1st generation version, this doorbell is much better at updating you on what’s happening and detecting activity.  The camera quality is enhanced while the resolution is much better. Zoom is another excellent feature you can use to zoom in images without losing quality.

The night vision has been improved as it captures high-quality and cleaner videos. Ring 2’s downloaded videos are also quite impressive because the live-feed quality has been upgraded. For instance, if you take a picture of your visitor on a rainy cloudy day, the visitor’s face will be visible. This doorbell also records in 1080p.

Here’s a table showing various specifications of the two doorbells.

Both doorbells work very well. You’ll get a notification with an option to begin a live feed when a visitor presses the button or approaches your door. If you’ve installed the Ring Chime, it will also sound. The doorbell’s two-way talk is a great feature you can use to provide further details when you aren’t at home and someone wants to leave a package.

The battery longevity is another feature worth mentioning as it is one of the reasons most people buy it. Ring claims the battery can last between 6-12 months before recharging. Other doorbell users have also complimented the battery life.

When it comes to field of view, the two doorbell’s cameras have a 100⁰ vertical and 160⁰ horizontal view. This is a decent field of view compared to other digital doorbells available as it is able to capture activities happening around and in front of your door. Both doorbells have 1080p HD resolution that provides high-quality recording to enable you identify intruders and visitors easily.

Other features

Mobile Application

It’s important for a digital doorbell to have a mobile app that’s functional as you can use it to navigate, monitor and control your doorbell. Your user experience will be affected heavily if Ring’s application fails to deliver.

Fortunately, the app really works well. It’s straightforward, intuitive and well-built. You won’t get lost or mess up. The app offers a lot of insight. You can watch recorded footage, check motion triggered activities, and check the battery life and status of your doorbell.

You can also set motion zones and schedule notifications to prevent the sound from interrupting at inappropriate times. Access can also be granted to your family members to enable them answer doorbells and review footage.

Moreover, you can disable motion and Ring alerts and customize the motion zones using the app. It’s possible to get a lot of false reports if your front door is near the street. You can minimize such instances by configuring the motion zones correctly.

You can also watch live videos without getting a notification. To achieve this, click your doorbell’s name then click ‘Live View’ in the app.

Wi-Fi Connectivity

Digital doorbells rely on Wi-Fi connection in order to allow you to view video, listen to audio and send you notifications. Ring 2 is compatible with 2.4 GHz 802.11b/g/n network while Ring Pro works well with 2.4 GHz signals as well as 5 GHz AC network standard. You’re unlikely to experience delayed notifications because 5 GHz networks are more reliable and much stronger compared to 2.4 GHz networks.

Cloud Storage Plans

Ring will allow you to use their cloud storage plan for 30 days free of charge. After the expiry of the 30 days, you’ll have to choose a plan from the three options available. You can also opt to continue using your camera without a plan. You’ll still get instant updates and also live stream video and audio.

If you decide to sign up, the basic option starts at $3/mo per camera. Apart from instant alerts and live streaming, you’ll get cloud storage to store your videos up to 60 days. You’ll also be given a 1 year warranty that covers theft and damage. This means if someone steals or damages your doorbell during the first year, Ring will make a replacement free of charge. You can also share your videos with your friends.

The Protection plan costs $10/mo and you’ll access all the features mentioned above. However, you’ll have unlimited cameras at no extra cost on the plan. You should subscribe to this plan if you’ve more than one camera especially if you’re a business owner or you’ve multiple homes. This plan comes with a lifetime warranty on all your cameras.

Power Options

With Ring 2, you can power your doorbell either via a hardwired power into your current doorbell kit or a rechargeable battery. The battery life is around 6-12 moths of a single charge with average use. So, you don’t have to keep worrying about changing or charging the battery. Also, the hardwire installation ensures it will always be active and on after the initial set up. It’s also worth noting that Ring 2 has a removable battery pack making it easy to charge your doorbell.

On-Demand Live Video

To expand on the above point, the hardwired power enables the two doorbells to offer on-demand live video. This feature ensures you’ve constant access to images of your front door to help you stay updated of the situation at hand and for increased convenience and security. However, if you choose the rechargeable battery power option for Ring 2 doorbell, the videos won’t be available because of consistent power requirements.

Third Party Integrations

Ring cameras work with Google Assistant, Wink, IFTTT, SmartThings and Alexa. You can find out the status of your cameras by issuing voice commands. If you’ve a smart display that’s enabled by Alexa like the Echo Show, you can watch a live feed from your doorbell. It comes in handy, especially when you’re in the bedroom and can’t get to the door quickly.

Your smart doorbell should have a simple installation process because no one likes spending a lot of time watching guides on YouTube or read manuals on how to complete a particular task. Fortunately, Ring manufactures DIY digital doorbells that take about 5 minutes to complete the setup process.
